Life Transitions Counselling
When life changes and you no longer recognise the path ahead
Not all loss comes through bereavement. Sometimes loss arrives through change.
A relationship ends; children leave home; retirement approaches; a career changes unexpectedly; a health diagnosis alters your plans; financial circumstances shift.
Dreams you held for the future suddenly look different.
These experiences can leave us feeling uncertain, overwhelmed and unsure of who we are or what comes next.
I provide counselling for adults navigating significant life transitions, helping you make sense of change and move forward with greater confidence, clarity and self-understanding.
The grief we don't always talk about
When we hear the word grief, we often think about death. Yet grief can also be a natural response to losing:
A relationship
A career
Financial security
Fertility
Health or physical ability
Independence
A sense of identity
Plans for the future
A way of life that once felt familiar
These losses can be just as significant and life-changing, even if they are not always recognised or understood by others.
You may find yourself grieving the life you thought you would have, and that grief deserves acknowledgement too.
Why change can feel so difficult
As human beings, we naturally seek familiarity and certainty.
Even when change may ultimately be positive, it can still bring fear, sadness, anxiety and self-doubt.
You may find yourself questioning:
Who am I now?
What happens next?
How do I move forward?
Why am I struggling when others seem to cope?
These are common questions during periods of transition.
The uncertainty of not knowing what comes next can sometimes feel more challenging than the change itself.
Common life transitions I support clients with
Relationship breakdown and divorce
The end of a relationship often involves grieving not only the person, but also shared dreams, routines and future plans.
Redundancy and career change
Work can form a significant part of our identity. Unexpected career changes can affect confidence, purpose and financial security.
Empty nest and family changes
When children grow up and leave home, many parents experience unexpected feelings of loss, sadness and uncertainty.
Retirement
Retirement can bring freedom and opportunity, but also questions around identity, purpose and belonging.
Fertility challenges
For many individuals and couples, fertility difficulties involve ongoing cycles of hope, disappointment and grief that can be emotionally exhausting.
Health changes and diagnoses
Health changes, including peri-menopause, burnout and diagnoses such as cancer, can alter plans, expectations and the way we see ourselves. I have particular experience supporting clients through peri-menopause and burnout.
Life transitions can affect emotional wellbeing in many different ways. Together we can explore:
Anxiety about the future
Loss of confidence
Feelings of being stuck
Identity changes
Decision-making
Managing uncertainty
Relationship challenges
Building resilience and self-understanding
Finding meaning after change
Loss changes us
One thing I have learned through both professional and personal experience is that loss often changes how we see ourselves and our place in the world.
While we cannot always control what happens to us, we can control how we respond and the actions we take, learning to adapt, grow and finding new ways forward.
Therapy isn't about pretending a loss didn't happen or forcing positivity.
It's about creating space to understand what has changed, what remains important to you and how you want to move forward.
Finding your way forward
One of the most important things I want clients to know is that it is possible to feel lost and still move forward.
You don't need to have all the answers right now.
You don't need a plan for the next five years.
You simply need a space where you can pause, reflect and begin to make sense of where you are today.
Sometimes that first conversation is enough to help you take the next step.
Take the first step
Whether you're facing a recent change or have been struggling for some time, counselling can provide a supportive space to explore your experience and find a way forward that feels right for you.
I offer life transition counselling in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, as well as online sessions across the UK.
If you'd like to discuss whether counselling could help, I offer a free introductory call where we can explore your needs and answer any questions you may have.
Loss isn't only about death. It's about the things, people, identities and futures we thought would always be there.
